Stephen Petitt
Stephen Pettitt, who was educated at the University of Exeter, has been writing on music since the late 1970s. He has been at different times a regular contributor to The Times, The Financial Times, the Sunday Express and the Evening Standard, and still pens CD reviews for the Sunday Times, with which he has been associated since the early 1990s. He has also at different times been a regular contributor to many music magazines and continues to write occasionally for Opera magazine. He’s broadcast for BBC Radios 3 and 4, BBC World Service and Radio France Musique, and also scripted the award-winning television documentary The Art of Conducting in the mid 1990s. As a juror he has served many prestigious competitions, including BBC Choir of the Year, the Paolo Borciano String Quartet Competition, the London International Piano Competition, and for many years (occasionally as chairman) the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. Current projects include preparing a scenario for a pasticcio on the life story of Casanova, to be performed at King’s Place in 2016. He has been President of the UK Critics’ Circle and from 2009 until 2014 was Director of Music at Benslow Music, Hitchin.
